Should governments subsidize health care?

Pro: Individuals deprived by illness of their ability to be economically productive cannot handle the high cost of health care. A pure capitalistic system provides no mechanism for preserving the physical well-being of citizens.

Con: Most citizens want the freedom to choose their own doctors and medical institutions. Subsidies of health care always involve State or federal management of health care, and such management typically restricts the choices of those who are in need of medical attention.

Con: The private funding of health care not only gives those who need medical attention a wider variety of hospitals and doctors from which to choose but also promotes competition among health care providers. That competition raises the quality of medical practice.
