Should laws permit passive euthanasia?

Case: An Indiana baby, Baby Doe, had an incomplete esophagus and Down's syndrome. Without surgery to repair the esophagus, the infant was destined to die. Corrective surgery would likely have preserved the life of the child. The parents opposed the operation to repair the abnormality of the esophagus. No operation was performed, and the baby died.

Factor: Obligation for intervention

Pro: We have no obligation to change the course of nature. If natural developments lead to the death of a human being, we are not to blame.

Con: Researchers have discovered or developed many treatments and procedures that enable human beings to live longer than they would without those interventions. We are cruel and blameworthy if we do not use them to extend and improve human lives.
