Should schools bus students to give them equal opportunities?

Factor: Inequalities among schools

Pro: Many school systems lack the resources that others have to give students a high quality education.

Factor: Integration and the breakdown of prejudice

Pro: Busing affords a mixing of students from various socioeconomic classes, and this breaks down prejudice and racism.

Factor: Desires of parents

Con: Very often, busing plans go against the wishes of parents. Some arrangements produce great inconvenience: some students who live within five minutes of a neighborhood school have to travel by bus for 45 minutes to get to a school to which a government agency has assigned them. Moreover, parents are concerned about the safety of their children when busing takes students for long distances to unfamiliar and sometimes unfriendly neighborhoods.

Factor: Difficulties in administration

Con: Busing is complicated and costly to local governments. The costs far outweigh the benefits.
