Should laws require payment for housework?

Factor: Contribution to society

Pro: Housework is an important contribution to society. Without individuals who do parttime or fulltime housework, many people would have much less time to spend on their careers or in public service.

Factor: Productivity of housework

Con: Housework is helpful and supportive, but it is not directly a part of the production and sale of goods, and therefore it does not add to the wealth of the society.

Factor: Cost to taxpayers

Con: Legal requirements that those who do housework be remunerated would create additional agencies of government which would burden citizens with additional taxes. Some agencies would have to be created to enforce the statute. And were the income from housework taxed, the Internal Revenue Service would have extra work to do. All this would add to the cost of government.

Con: If a law required that those who do housework be paid, many of those who do not get paid for doing housework would go to court and add to the burden on the judicial system. Or they may expect or demand that the government remunerate them for housework. Either of these possibilities would put additional unwanted stresses on the country.
