Should a company that quits operating in a community compensate the community for the losses produced?

Factor: Responsibility for producing dependency of workers on a company

Pro: Companies that are the main employers for generations in a given region must realize that they have bred in their workers a dependence on the company. Because of this, a company has an obligation to remunerate a community, if the company has quit operating there.

Con: Companies that have not promised to support a community in the event that they withdraw from it have no obligation to do so. Companies, just by participating in local affairs, do not incur responsibilities to guarantee their workers lifelong employment. Employees should understand from the beginning of their work lives that their employment is a function not only of their wishes but also of the needs and interests of the companies with which they are affiliated. Businesses do not owe the regions in which they operate any financial support other than the fair wages they must pay their workers.
