Pro: Biological links between parents and children are easier to determine than the strength and significance of psychological ties. And laws serve society best when they afford clear-cut guidance to courts of law. Moreover, biological links very often entail strong emotional bonds: biological parents are most likely to have the strongest attachments to their offspring.
Con: A child is not the property of its biological parents. Those parents do not have a greater right to retain control over it than any other person who would give it adequate love and care.
Con: Where adoptions proceed in a legal and orderly manner, and the biological parents have given their rights of parenthood to the adoptive parents, then the removal of the child from its adoptive parents is disruptive to the development of the child.
