Should names and photographs of newly convicted criminals be publicized?

Pro: The shame that is put upon newly convicted criminals when their pictures are displayed on television or their names are included in public announcements will serve as a general deterrent to crime.

Con: In many cases, different people share the same name. The publication of names of criminals may embarrass and produce other unfortunate consequences for some innocent people.

Con: Judges and juries determine the appropriate punishments for convicted criminals. Additional punishments inflicted on convicts by the media could be more than intended by the courts. The effects of the policy would be most severe for first-time convicts.
