Should a lawyer help to get a client acquitted of a crime if that lawyer is convinced that the client is guilty?

Pro: The lawyer is a part of a system of justice, and the system determines guilt and creates remedies. The system in its attempt to be impartial is skeptical of all claims; it assumes that everyone is playing to win the case.

Con: Lawyers who use every strategy and exploit every technicality to win acquittal for a client are not serving the cause of justice in their societies.

Pro: Even the guilty are entitled to fair treatment in the courts. This entails representation by an attorney whose obligation is to protect as well as possible the rights of all clients. Lawyers who do only what is necessary to protect the rights of their clients and who let courts make decisions about the guilt of the accused play a vital role in our system of justice.
