Prenuptial or antenuptial agreements are plans for the orderly distribution of assets in case a married couple gets separated or divorced. They are made to guide two people through what may be one of the most difficult events of their lives. They anticipate the negotiations which would arise with the breakdown of love and trust. Because such agreements are founded on the assumption that a marriage could fall apart, a great many people find them unpleasant even to consider as a part of the preparation for the wedding: asking to have one may suggest the presence of cynicism or suspicion at the outset.
