Should laws allow the surveillance of employees in the workplace?

Methods of surveillance may include videorecording and the use of mechanical and electronic devices for measuring job performance.

Pro: New methods of surveillance are just extensions of the tracking and monitoring that employers find useful and employees have accepted for decades.

Pro: The new tools provide employers with data that helps them evaluate and train employees.

Con: While employees appreciate the need for employers to evaluate their work, they do not appreciate being held on a tight leash. Indeed, knowing that they are being very closely scrutinized may impair their performance by decreasing morale. An atmosphere of suspicion and distrust may prevail in a workplace with omnipresent eyes and ears trained by management on workers.
